Happy Sunday!
And welcome to today's edition of 'Conscious living with Purnima'. In today's post I will talk about practical ways of moving forward where you find yourself stuck & practicing letting go as a way of life.
I will try my best to not get philosophical and contain my thoughts to effective guidelines.
Let's get to it.
1. Ask yourself if you have clearly defined your goals in the areas where you seek improvement:
Oftentimes you will realize that the areas where you are not making progress, are the areas where your goals have been vaguely defined. Vaguely defining goals such as, 'I want to improve my relationships', or 'I want to be fit', 'eat healthy' or 'grow my business', does not give you a clear indication of what exactly you are seeking to achieve and how much effort, energy & time commitment is required.
To use the same examples, getting specific would be:
✨ I will meet my friends once every fortnight to strengthen our bond & connection.
✨ I will strength train twice a week to get stronger in the body or I will practice yoga 3 times a week to enhance my flexibility & balance.
✨ I will eat 2 cups of vegetables and include protein in 3 meals.
✨ I will talk about my business to 2 new people every week or I will get 4 referrals for my business every month or I will increase my clientele by 50% next month.
Such clear definitions will help you gauge effort and track progress.
Allow yourself to reset some of the goals if you feel you are unable to put in the required amount of effort or the goal seems unachievable.
In technical terms these goals are called SMART where SMART stands for Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound. If you are setting a goal in any area of your life, be it professional or personal, let that be a SMART one.
I find that when I put down my goals in a SMART way, many things start falling in place. I have better mental focus, attract opportunities that did not exist before thereby enabling me to move forward on my goals. There is power to clarity and power to putting things down in writing. Harness that power to get unstuck.
B. Comparison isn’t just the thief of joy, it’s the thief of everything. Avoid it:
It's tempting to compare our journey to others and set goals with disregard to what our lives are about. This can cause us to feel stuck as we have set unreasonable goals that are not based on the reality of our unique life situation.
To avoid that, assess your current mindset (most of our mental blocks are due to years of past conditioning that can be hard to break), habits (habits bring us results and we may need to cultivate new ones to see better results) and environment (not everyone is blessed with a supportive one and it may require additional effort on your part to build something where you can thrive). Keep these in mind when you set your goals.
Being self-aware of the unique challenges you face can help you remain self-compassionate as you work towards your goals.
C. Let go:
Ok, so I had to get philosophical. I know it's hard and I struggle too but it's empowering and freeing to believe that what's meant for you will always find a way to come to you or as Rumi would put it, "what you seek is seeking you". So, once you have set clear goals and are taking action (small steps count and a slow pace is ok), just let things flow :)
With that I will conclude the 4 Part Series on 'Finding the lost art of living'.
I hope you will consciously practice looking for fun & play in everyday life, create conscious inner silence, pay attention to what your emotions are telling you, get specific with your life goals and finally allow things to flow. Practicing these habits may not bring you accolades and conspicuous worldly gains, but they will definitely add more ease and peace to your inner world.
